Wrought Iron vs. Aluminum Fence

Has the idea of an ornamental fence captured your fancy? Ornamental fences are certainly beautiful, and most often chosen for their classic look and higher-security appeal. Most people assume that an ornamental fence is always made out of wrought iron, but the truth is that many ornamental fences are also made out of aluminum. What are the differences between the two and which kind of material is right for you? Let’s take a look at the facts about each.

Wrought Iron

“Wrought” as an adjective here means “(of metals) beaten out or shaped by hammering”.  Wrought iron is iron that has been shaped while extremely hot. In fact, true wrought iron has ceased to be manufactured commercially since mild steel (a similar metal to iron) is now used in its place and is less expensive to produce. To most people, wrought iron simply means the classic look and style of a shaped metal fence.

Let’s begin with the pros of wrought iron. An iron fence is perhaps the most secure option available, as it is extremely difficult to damage or penetrate. It is also undeniably beautiful and a classic look for any property.

There are some cons to wrought iron. It is one of the priciest fencing materials you can use, especially if you are planning to get genuine wrought iron that has been made by a competent blacksmith. Authentic wrought iron could cost hundreds if not thousands of dollars per section. Choosing mild steel would be somewhat cheaper than iron, but still quite expensive. Additionally, wrought iron (and mild steel) is heavy and difficult to install, especially on a slope. Because of its weight and the skill required to install it, the cost of an iron fence will be significantly more than other materials.

Wrought iron fence poses some significant maintenance requirements. A wrought iron fence will eventually rust after constant exposure to moisture, so it must be thoroughly examined every year to find any rust spots that are present. Any rust must be sanded off and repainted. Every 3-4 years the entire iron fence will need completely sanded and repainted.

While wrought iron is the perfect and ideal fence material for some homeowners, many others find that an aluminum fence is a better option. Let’s take a look at the facts about aluminum!

Aluminum Fence

Aluminum fence is not the same as classic wrought iron, but it is still beautiful. Similar styles can be procured in aluminum as in iron, with many different color options available. Residential aluminum fence is most often chosen for its decorative appearance and lower cost.

Aluminum fence is significantly cheaper than iron fence because it is easier to produce and much lighter to handle. Due to its light weight, zero welding requirements, and ease of installation, aluminum fence has quite a bit less of an installation cost than iron.

How strong is aluminum fence when compared to iron? Aluminum fence is not as strong as iron but it does still offer a good amount of strength/security. Although rare, it is possible for aluminum fence to be bent or dented by enough force. For families wanting a higher strength aluminum fence, commercial or industrial grades of aluminum fence will be more than adequate for security purposes.

Lastly, aluminum never rusts, which allows it to be a fantastic low maintenance option. Instead of frequent sanding and painting, an occasional wash with a garden hose will be all that an aluminum fence needs. This makes aluminum the ideal material for pool fences where lots of moisture will be frequently present. Since very little maintenance is necessary with aluminum, the cost of an aluminum fence is less in the long term.
