Many people are surprised to discover just how much of an investment a new wood fence can be. Wood fences are often costly projects, so you want your fence to last as long as possible after it is installed. In order to ensure that your wood fence lasts the optimum amount of time, you will want to do some important maintenance. Maintaining a wood fence includes tasks such as washing off dirt and debris, inspecting for damage, and staining/sealing.
Staining/sealing is important to keep your fence protected from moisture and resulting rot, mold or mildew. However, it is also important that you know the proper time to stain your fence before you begin. When is the right time?
After Installation
There are times when you can stain your fence right away after it has been installed. Other times you may need to wait several weeks or a few months before staining. The determining factor is how dry the wood is. Different types of wood dry at varying rates.
Types of wood fences that take longer to dry are ones made of pine, spruce, other softwoods, or pressure-treated lumber. Wait at least 4-6 weeks before staining these types of fences for the first time. Redwood and cedar fences can be stained a couple of days to a week after installation. Fences built with hardwoods (oak, teak, mahogany etc.) can usually be stained right away.
After Drying
Knowing how much moisture is in your fence will help you determine the best time to stain it. In order to stain successfully, your fence must be completely dry. You see, stain/sealant (usually an all-in-one product) is made to soak into wood and bond with its fibers. If the wood is too wet when the stain is applied, the stain will be unable to soak in evenly- if at all- and will result in a patchy appearance, peeling, and flaking. Be sure your fence is dry before you begin. If it has rained, wait a few days until the moisture is gone.
How can you determine of your fence is too wet to stain? You can purchase a moisture meter or try this water test. Drop a quarter size amount of water onto your fence. If your fence is dry enough, the water will be absorbed after a few minutes. If your fence is still too wet, the water will be unable to soak in after a few minutes.
Every 2-3 Years
Aim to stain your fence every 2-3 years. However, other factors may cause your fence to weather more or less quickly. Here are some factors to be aware of as you determine how often to stain:
Type of Wood– Not all wood is created equal when it comes to resisting the elements, even when stained. Wood that is more durable will last longer between coats and need less maintenance.
Mold or Mildew– Do you see mold or mildew growing on your fence? If so, it may already be time to power wash and stain again.
Climate– Is your fence in full sun and extreme temperatures, or in a milder climate with more shade? A fence in harsher elements will need to be stained more often.
Quality of Stain- Don’t use the cheapest stain you can find. Quality in the product you use will help your fence last longer. Also, be sure to read up on how to apply the stain correctly. Poorly applied stain will cause the fence to deteriorate more quickly.
