Pressure Treated Lumber
For many years, the choice decking materials have been either AC2 pressure treated lumber (green treat) or cedar. AC2 pressure treated lumber is wood that has had preservatives infused into it under pressure to protect the wood from decay and insects. This chemical treatment gives the wood a greenish hue, hence the term “green treat”. AC2 lumber is a less expensive decking material, but requires regular washing and staining to last. AC2 is also prone to warping badly in the sun as it dries from the chemical treatment.
Cedar
Cedar has been (and still is) another popular choice for decking material. The oil found in cedar naturally repels insects and resists decay. Cedar is less likely to warp in the sun, and if washed and stained regularly it will last for many years. This is a good choice for homeowners who prefer a natural wood smell and look.
Composite
In recent years, composite decking has become a new option. Composite is a man-made material consisting almost entirely of recycled plastics and recycled wood. Unlike the previous two decking materials, composite boards are designed to be almost entirely maintenance free. They do not require regular washing or staining, and are highly resistant to decay, splinters, scratches, and fading. When properly installed, composite decking does not warp. With several brands of composite decking to choose from, there are extensive color, texture, and style options.
Most—if not all—brands of composite decking offer fade and stain warranties of anywhere from 25 to 50 years. Homeowners all around the world are opting for composite over natural wood to avoid the time-consuming maintenance that natural wood requires to reap the same decking lifespan.
